This side extension project enhances the ground floor living spaces of an existing semi-detached period property, creating a more open and connected family home. The proposals carefully respond to the existing levels of the site, using the changes in height to create a series of distinct yet connected spaces that improve both functionality and spatial quality.

Internally, the existing living and kitchen areas are opened up through the removal of structural columns and the introduction of high-level beams, creating a more generous and fluid arrangement. The new extension provides a dedicated dining space, positioned at a lower level, alongside a new rear entrance incorporating a practical boot room and downstairs WC.

A key feature of the design is the considered use of the existing level changes to create a dynamic stepped layout. The spaces transition naturally from the elevated living area, through the kitchen and down into the dining space, before connecting directly to the garden beyond. This approach not only strengthens the relationship between the interior and exterior but also maximises ceiling heights and creates a unique sequence of spaces within the existing footprint of the home.
